Community recovery is optimised when communities lead and take credit for community achievements. However, community based recovery may include a mismatch between a community’s recovery intent and its capabilities.

In this article, Major General Chris Field draws on his experience in disaster recovery management and numerous deployments to provide six ideas to help close community recovery intent-to-capability gaps following a natural disaster.
