He highlights the importance of understanding the ‘effect’ of an action on an adversary and suggests that AI provides a way of measuring this. He then describes how, when faced with questions of immense complexity, humans simplify the information in order to reach a conclusion. He offers ways AI can counter this using the following three examples:
What are my goals? When faced with complexity, humans can substitute desire for reality, swapping “what effect?” with “what do I want the effect to be?” AI is not susceptible to goal swapping or subconsciously changing its measure of effectiveness. Psychology isn’t a factor.
What is the effect on a mental stereotype of the enemy? Rather than deferring to stereotypes or simplifying an adversary’s emotions based on the ‘us’ vs ‘them’ mentality, AI can objectively detect emotional responses based on text, images of faces, and pitch of voice.
What is the effect here and now, and only here and now? Humans simplify the ‘effects’ of an event as there is too much time and space to process all the information. AI can solve this by measuring algorithms in a broader sense over a long period of time.
According to the author, artificial intelligence is a means of solving the ancient problem of limited cognitive capacity in an information-abundant world. For this reason, it can help us observe the mind of the enemy, a place we have never been able to see before.
