In this article from our wider PME network, Andrew McCoy uses the experience he has gained while working as a battalion level staff officer to develop what he believes are the six characteristics of a highly effective staff officer – professionalism, optimism, ‘buy-in’, motivation, awareness of the environment and the ability to see the bigger picture.

Throughout the article Andrew continually reminds the reader that the staff’s function is to enable the commander so that they can make well informed, accurate and timely decisions. The aforementioned characteristics enable this to occur.

Although written for junior officers embarking on their first staff appointment, the advice is also relevant for Sergeants and Warrant Officers fulfilling staff roles.
