The United States Army are arguably our closest military allied partners. Therefore, it is important for us to understand their leadership doctrine, values and belief systems in order to enhance our level of interoperability. Here we present FM 6-22 Army Leadership (2006) which establishes leadership doctrine and fundamental principles for all officers, non-commissioned officers, and Army civilians across all components.
The manual states that competent leaders of character are necessary for the Army to meet the challenges in the dangerous and complex security environment we face. It uses the ‘BE-KNOW-DO’ concept to express what is required of Army leaders. It is critical that Army leaders be agile, multi-skilled pentathletes who have strong moral character, broad knowledge, and keen intellect. They must display these attributes and leader competencies bound by the concept of the ‘Warrior Ethos.’ The manual suggests that leaders must be committed to lifelong learning to remain relevant and operationally ready during a career of service to the Nation.
The manual is divided into four parts and 12 chapters, each tackling important components which capture the practicalities of leadership in the armed forces. Army leaders must set the example, teach, and mentor, and this manual provides the principles, concepts, and training to accomplish this important task.
