This article by Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster (Major General at the time of publication) via Modern War Institute focuses on the study of war and warfare. McMaster is a strong advocate for professional military education and the study of the profession of arms.

He explains how to best approach the study of war, and why understanding the context and continuities of war is vitally important. These include:

  1. War is political
  2. War is human
  3. War is an uncertain contest of wills

H.R. McMaster encourages self-study across a variety of mediums including books, articles, doctrine, film, lectures, practical application exercises, and on-line discussion forums to educate leaders about the nature of war and the character of warfare.  This study also emphasises the responsibilities of leaders to prepare their soldiers for combat, lead them in battle and accomplish the mission.
