Sometimes there is a tendency to be confused between the ‘Operational art’ and the ‘Operational’ level of war.  To examine the Operational art in more detail, it is recommended you consult some of our other posts on the #BreakIn, as we have several posts dedicated to explaining that.

In this post, we thought we should also explain the levels of war and how they interact.  You can find explanations of the different levels of war in our doctrine (LWD 1) and several other publications available, but this document via the United States Air Force College provides a concise 1 1/2 page explanation of each of the levels and how they relate to one another. It is easy to understand, and hopefully after reading it will clarify for you the difference between the Operational art and the Operational level of war.
