Here at the Cove we’re all about developing as soldiers, officers and leaders.  So here we offer you a genuine ‘New Year’s Resolution’ opportunity in this Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in English Grammar and Style from the University of Queensland (commences 27 Feb 17).

MOOCs exploded onto the scene in 2008.  They are free online courses run by the world’s best universities, available to anyone with a computer and an internet connection.  Over 24 million people take them every year.  You can read about MOOCs here.

This MOOC, presented free from the University of Queensland, is an 8 week course in English grammar and style taking no more than an hour or two a week.  Using videos and exercises, it will take you through lessons on grammar, word usage, writing style, sentence / paragraph construction and punctuation.

You can access the MOOC here, or by clicking the image above.  The Course starts on 27th Feb so get in there early.

Why would you do this?  Put simply, it will make you a better operator and help you get promoted.  The ability to write clear orders, articulate your ideas, and make arguments is an increasingly important skill.  It’s a key part of leadership that is often forgotten.

Worth noting there are thousands of MOOCs to chose from.  Why not have a look around at EdX, FutureLearn and Coursera.

  1. After reading this post, I enrolled in the Grammar and Style MOOC. It was a very positive experience and I highly recommend this course for improving writing skills. The course follows a descriptive, rather than prescriptive, approach to grammar instruction by reviewing actual language-in-use. I particularly enjoyed the interviews with linguistics professors, such as David Crystal and Geoffrey Pullman, about the complexities of C21st formal English language conventions. The assessments are simple and well-designed, confirming learning of foundation skills and extending applications into real-world contexts. The next course begins in September.

    1. Hi Linda,

Thank you so much for providing this feedback on the MOOC. We are glad that you found the MOOC worthwhile and really appreciate you confirming the worth of this Cove source. We will certainly now endeavor to find some other MOOCs that may also prove beneficial to Cove followers.
